The Skinny on "Alli"

Well, I normally wouldn't do this, but after readingarticles and being barraged by ads, I want to comment on the new diet thingie hitting the market... Alli.

First off, what is it? Well Alli is a half dose of the substance found in Xenical, orlistat. Xenical is a prescribed medication given to only those overly obese and comes with it a host of side-effects. The half-dose Alli is an over-the-counter version that is availible to anyone looking for weight-loss assistance.

The primary function of orlistat is to prevent the absorption of fats from the diet - reducing caloric intake. It works by inhibiting an enzyme in the pancreas responsible for breaking down triglycerides in the intestine. Without the enzyme, fats are prevented from becoming absorbable and may then be excreted undigested. It is estimated that the drug blocks approximately 25% of all fat in the diet.

While most of the oils are eliminated as waste in the normal way, as mentioned some unpleasant side effects may include gas, incontinence, and oily spotting. What the... These effects are obviously quite uncomfortable and inconvenient at times.

This method is not new as it was use in some potato chips a while back and is very similar to the use of castor oil with similar side effects.

It is easy to see why many people would be enthusiastic about a product that allows you to reduce calorie intake without actually eating less. But I subscribe to the classic diet and exercise approach. I do not subscribe to the instant gratification approach, and believe nothing in the world is "free".

Alternatives containing hoodia gordonii help in controlling appetite and can also help to boost energy levels, assuring you get more out of your visits to the gym or eating less in general. I have not tried this, but may at some point if I deem it worthy.
