Over the last couple of weeks, I've been trying different combinations and types of fuels to try and see if I can benefit in some way beyond what I've been doing for the past couple of years. Stoke the fire with a bottle of Gatorade.
So far I've determined I don't care for Hammer gels much for their really liquid consistency compared to others... but that could be because I dripped a bit on my gloves when taking it. I like Clif's raspberry gel ('cause it tastes like raspberry preserves - my fave on a PB&J!) flavor and don't mind the consistency. But, like in the past, I simply prefer Gu's Vanilla Bean. My long-time favorite 100 calorie quick fuel. On a side note, I did take in another Hammer Gel before a long run yesterday and for some reason, the consistency actually favored the event. It went down a bit less sticky so I didn't need to take in water to wash it all down. Something that is a bit hit and miss on Gu Gels. I will be switching to more Gu use for the next few outings to see how it goes with that stuff.
As far as a drink, I tried e-Load. The taste was a bit weak (lemon) at first but got better as the ride went on. I noticed it was a bit sticky on the lips, which I did not particularly like. As far as a fuel, it seemed to do fine. But nearing the 14 mile mark of a hard MTB outing, I could start to feel a little muscle fatigue near the end.
I would still like to try HEED and Hammer Nutrition's other drink mixes but I find it hard to locate the sample packs. Purchasing an entire canister may be my last option at this point. I did find a good deal on e-Load and did picked up a canister for extended trials. I may need to do this anyway just to see the long-term differences between the mixes.
