Single Speed... DONE!

Well there you have it. My Winter project is complete only a handful of days before Spring rolls around the corner! Well, OK, not quite complete but darn close. I have to put on a water bottle cage, install some more functional crank dust caps, slightly tweak one of the front brake pads and finally put the proper air pressure into the shock. I can't seem to find that little valve adapter specifically for this fork. Oi vay. Another quick spin to Velo City Cycles to raid their parts boxes... again!

The final stretch to this bike's completion wasn't all roses. Since time was short, I let Freewheeler build up my rear wheel. The extra bit of cost was well worth it as the wheel was beautifully built 3X and with 2.0 DT Champion spokes and silver brass nipples. Thanks to Gordy for the build and Tam for getting me all set up! I wanted the added strength in the rear fron the added torque plus the fact that there are only 28 spokes back there. I think I chose to convert one of the few frames out there that would not work with the White Industries ENO Eccentric Hub... at least without some quick finagling. The problem was that the replaceable deraileur hanger is a two-piece design. This put 3 screws that protruded to the inside of the dropout... right in the path of the hub's ingenius eccentric behavior. The outer plate also created the dropout slot for the hub. Long story short, I removed all the screws and the inside plate of the hanger. I installed the hub and sandwiched the remaining plate with the hub and axle. I did the adjustment, which was incredibly easy, and snugger it all up. Voila! Single speed.

Well, not yet. The position of the ENO hub hosed the brakepad adjustment. Readjusting wasn't straight forward since the rim was higher than the adjustment range of the brakes. I ended up anging the pad the best I could. After some good, old fashioned downhill grab of the levers will bring the pads to full contact in no time.

Next up will be the first ride...
